Perry Walters passed away peacefully at home, on July 14, 2015 in his 93rd year.
Born in Grand Lake on Feb. 18, 1923, Perry was one of 10 children to his parents, the late Frederick William Walters and Lillian (Fillmore) Walters.
Perry resided in Whitney Pier since the early 1960s, ultimately building the family home there in 1965.
Perry served in the Second World War with the Royal Regina Rifles Regiment. He was a prisoner of war in Germany during the Second World War and the recipient of several service medals.
Perry held a variety of labour and craft related jobs during his earlier years. For the last 25 years of his working life he was a boilermaker and longterm employee of Babcock & Wilcox. He retired in 1988 and is a member of Boiler Makers’ Union Local 73.
Perry was a former member of Sydney Elks Club and was a current member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12.
Dad was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. One of his favourite getaways was to Gillisdale, Inverness County to a special place called The Glen.
Perry is survived by his son, Tim Walters, who resided with him and daughter, Shauna Walters of Sydney. Perry is survived by siblings John 'Jack' Walters (Grand Lake), Shirley Hyrluk (Moncton) and Jennie Lee (Toronto). Also surviving are grandsons, Matthew and James McGrath and great-granddaughter, Finley McGrath, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his former wife, Dorothy Isabel Walters and daughters, Catherine (Kay) Walters and Dorothy Joanne McGrath. He was also predeceased by his siblings, Louise Briand (Westmount); Delia Dobson (Toronto); William Walters (Niagra); Edward Walters (Reserve); Charles Walters (Grand Lake) and Helen Hulford (New Waterford).
Shauna and Tim also extend a special thank you to Mary O’Neil of New Dawn Homecare who provided exceptional care and friendship to dad for the past several years.
Although dad was baptized in the Baptist Church, he was not a church attendee.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Chant’s Funeral Home. Dad will be waked on Friday, July 17th from 12 to 2 p.m. with service and reception to follow in the funeral home chapel .‎
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Cape Breton County whose services were invaluable as dad entered the last stages of his life.
