Passed on: July 16th, 2015

It is with great sadness and fond memories that the family of George Herbert Slade announces his peaceful passing on July 16, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney on Oct. 27, 1928, he was the son of the late George and Dinah (Forsey) Slade.
George is survived by his sisters, Helen Ellsworth and Jessie Snow, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as sisters-in-law, Pearl O’Connell, Peggy MacKinnon and Neva Slade and brother-in-law Geoff Forshaw. He is also survived by close friend and honorary family member Anne Marie MacDonald.
George was predeceased by his wife Carmel (MacDonald), sisters. Alice Courage and Ruth Forshaw and brother Jim. He was also predeceased by in-laws, Ann and John DeCoste, Elizabeth MacDonald, Duncan MacKinnon, Joe O’Connell, Colin MacDonald, William Courage, Malcolm Ellsworth and Melvin Snow.
He was retired from Sydney Steel Corporation, however at one time he took a leave to work on the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Sir John A. MacDonald, where he travelled across the Arctic Circle, much to his enjoyment as he loved the sea. His interests were varied and in his earlier years he was an avid scuba diver, enjoyed the New Year’s Polar Bear Swims and loved the outdoors. Whether jigging cod, out at the bungalow in Middle Cape or hunting with one of his friends, there were always great stories to share with family. After the passing of his beloved wife Carmel, he took a few trips across the country to visit nieces and nephews. There will always be “Uncle George” stories and he will always be in our hearts.
Special thanks to Dr. Murphy and to the staff of the ICU and Palliative Care departments at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their wonderful care. Also thank you to George’s friends and neighbours for your kindness.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at 11a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015, at S.W. Chant Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra Street, Sydney with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A reception will follow and Interment to take place at Resurrection Cemetery immediately afterwards.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the An Cala, Palliative Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or charity of one’s choice.
