Hartigan Campbell

Passed in: New Waterford
Passed on: July 17th, 2015

It is with the utmost sadness that we announce the passing of our dad Hartigan Campbell at home on Friday, July 17, 2015 surrounded by his loving children.
He was a coal miner with Devco for 39 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the UMWA and was also a past member of the USTA, Standardbred Canada and the Cape Breton Horsemen’s Association where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
As a young man, he hauled coal and delivered groceries, making sure the school and hospital had coal. No matter what the weather or distance Dad was there.
He was well known throughout the harness racing community near and far. Everyone who knew him knew of his signature hat on sideways, as he made his way through the crowd grabbing someone by the shoulder as he went by. Everyone waiting to be acknowledged by him. He loved his wife and children but his grandchildren held the highest point in his heart. He was the happiest when they were around. His signature goodbye was “you be careful” no matter how old we were.
He is survived by his loving wife Georgina; children, Bobby (Cathy), Donald, Edmonton, Mabel (Bennett) Mckenzie, Darlene Campbell-Hurley (Roddy); son-in-law Dave 'Crocker' Kelly; sisters, Janie Crowley, Olga Wilcox and Betty Campbell; brother Dougald Campbell; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter Colleen Kelly, grandchildren, Michelle Penny, Alyssa Dawn Campbell and Blake Campbell, brothers, Ewen and John Alex, sisters, Theresa Westhaver and Mary Brewer, brothers-in-law Joe Wilcox, Bud Westhaver, Travis Crowley, sister in-law Theresa Campbell.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 12-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate Dad’s life will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Albert MacPherson officiating followed by a luncheon at the Parish Hall Convent Street, all are welcome. Burial will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.

Special thanks to the Palliative Care and the VON for all of their support.
There are no words that can express the sadness we feel for the loss of our dad. If tears alone could have saved you, we would not had to say goodbye. We will love you and miss you to the end of time.
