Paul Schaal

Passed on: July 8th, 2015

Paul Henry Schaal- Aug 24, 1927 to July 8, 2015
Paul was born to parents John and Mary Schaal in the Kealy Springs area. Paul was the baby of 8 kids. He had 5 sisters and 2 brothers, Annie (died of pneumonia as an infant), Erna, Maggie, Alice, Ida and brother’s Walter and Johnny. Grandpa spent half his life on the bench before moving to Maple Creek in 1969, where he would spend the rest of his life. In 2000 Grandpa and Grandma moved into town, and his last move was into the Lodge in 2012 until his death.
Paul married Phyllis Studer on July 5, 1949 in Shaunavon, SK. They lived on the home place for a bit then bought Willard Grahams place north of Eastend and stayed there for about 10 years then moved to the Stone house north east of Maple Creek. They retired to town in June of 2000. In 2012 Paul moved into the Lodge and grandma would move to the manor in 2014.
Paul and Phyllis had two children, a son Ron and a daughter Vonda.
Grandpa loved his animals. In his younger days he raised his Shetland pnoes, and always had horses, cows, cats, rabbits, and a collie dog beside him, or chasing the tractor tires!
Music was a big part of his life. He could play the violin for hours. He also strummed the guitar now and then. He played with Howard Drockner, Violet Kaglea, and George Matechuk for many dances in the area. After meals he could be heard playing til the last guest went home.
Grandkids and great grand kids were the light of his eyes. Taking us fishing, hunting, teaching us to drive and make bales, or ride horses, to popsicles on hot days, to wheel chair races in the lodge, or enjoying visits with dogs and ponies that were snuck into the lodge. The grand kids brought out the kid in grandpa again.
Grandpa’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, searching for arrowheads, and cactus berries. He loved to shoot the breeze with his buddies at the bar. And take a drive all over town to see what was going on. He always had a puzzle on the go to, whether it was a crossword puzzle or a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle, grandpa always kept his mind and hands busy. After moving to town he looked forward to his tulips blooming each spring.
Grandpa is survived by his wife of 66 years Phyllis, son Ron (Lavada) Schaal, daughter Vonda (Blaine) Russell, grandchildren Sam (Ryan) Wakelam, Dawn (Darren) Clermont, and Jay Russell, his great grandchildren Chance, Paislee, Spencer, Griffin, and Haylynn. He is survived by his sister Alice and numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.
A private family burial will take place in Maple Creek on Saturday, August 1, 2015 followed by a social for family and friends (feel free to call the family for information).
