It is with heartfelt sadness, that we, Herbie’s family announce his passing. Herbie, age 67, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at the Glace Bay Hospital, Monday, July 20, 2015.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Herbert and Monica (Burke) MacNeil.
Herbie fought a long and hard battle with both dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He spent the last three years in nursing care, the most recent being Victoria Haven in Glace Bay.
Herbie, an avid bowler, worked and operated Knox Bowling Lanes for over 35 years with his co-worker Bernie. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, shopping and partying in his garage with his family and friends. He also enjoyed his two weekly breakfasts with his friends Robbie and Donnie at Mike’s Lunch.
Herbie will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 43 years Shirley (nee Grant) McNeil; sons, Greg (Jill), Cold Lake, Alta.; and Bradley, Glace Bay; his beautiful grandchildren, Brianna (Naish), Amy, Nicholas; great-granddaughter Peyton; brothers, Robert (Betty), Georges River, Raymond(Mary), Sudbury, Ont.; sisters, Nora McNeil, Janet (Robert King), Cecilia Kennedy and brother-in-law Alex MacIntyre, all of Glace Bay. Herbie will also be sadly missed by his mother-in-law Jean Grant; brothers-in-law, Bobby (Donna), Donnie(Colleen), Todd(Tina)and Gordie; sisters-in-law, Debi Billard and Louann (Wally Buckler); numerous nieces, nephews and good friends Al and Catherine MacDougall.
Besides his parents, Herbie was also predeceased by his infant son David, brother Billy, sister Kathleen MacDonald, father in-law Robert Grant and brother-in-law Sandy Billard.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A gathering of family and friends, in a celebration of Herbie’s life, will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Hub Club, East Avenue, Glace Bay.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Parkinson Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
