Frederic Dykeman Grimmer

Frederic Dykeman Grimmer

With sad hearts but joy in a life well lived, the family of Frederic D. Grimmer announce his sudden passing on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the age of 86.
Born in Newcastle, N.B. on February 8, 1929, Fred was the only child of the late Rev. Harry and Greta (Dykeman) Grimmer.
He was predeceased by his first wife and the mother of his four children, Helen M. (Goucher) in 1992. Fred is survived by his wife Elisabeth Johnsen (McMahon) of Grand View Manor, Berwick, his daughters Lucille White (Joe) of Oromocto N.B., Sarah Grimmer of Halifax N.S. and sons John Grimmer (Melanie) of Grand Barachois N.B. and Parker Grimmer (Heather) of Charlottetown PE , grandchildren Jeffery White (Jan) of Oromocto N.B., Amy Smith (Stephen) of Berwick N.S., Douglas Eamer (Kerri) of Lively Ont., Mitchell Eamer of Calgary Alta., John Grimmer and Maggie Grimmer of Charlottetown PE, and great grandchildren Jeffery and Gabriel Smith and Jack and Madeline White, extended family and friends old and new. He will be remembered fondly.
Fred was a graduate of Acadia University earning his B.A. in 1950 and M.A. in 1951 and with great spirit, recently attended his 65th class reunion.
His work included the insurance business and a long and storied career in both provincial and federal service beginning in the 1950’s. He served as Regional Director General for Industry Trade and Commerce in Fredericton from 1970-1980, Commercial Secretary with the Canadian Embassy in Athens, Greece from 1980-1983, retiring from federal service in Charlottetown in 1985. He loved his work, but his lasting joy was in each person he met, and each highway he drove.
Retirement years were enjoyed fully as they allowed for winter travel to warm climates and extended summers at the cottage on the Bay of Fundy in his beloved Margaretsville. He was a passionate and tireless gardener, attentive to his various flower and vegetable gardens.
A lifelong thirst for knowledge saw him daily devour his newspapers, magazines and all forms of television news. A story teller extraordinaire, he could and would conduct a conversation on most any topic given the opportunity.
He was proud of and so interested in the lives of his family. Every day he found a new joy in their stories. A man of great faith he served his Baptist church community in Middleton, Dartmouth, Halifax, Fredericton, Charlottetown and Wolfville.
His children wish to thank the management and staff of Kings Riverside Court, Kentville for their wonderful care and friendship over the last five years and most recently the management and staff of Wedgewood House for Seniors, Kentville who welcomed and made Dad feel so at home these last six weeks.
To all those who came to Dad’s aid in Margaretsville on Saturday and tried so hard for a different outcome we thank you for your professionalism, care and support.
To honor Dad’s wishes there will be no funeral or visitation. Family will gather to celebrate his life at a private service overlooking the bay in Margaretsville. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Middleton.
Arrangements are entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448.
Donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Margaretsville Community Hall Society, the Margaretsville Lighthouse Society or a charity of one’s choice.
