FOWNES, DONALD ROBERT
1925-2015
Don Fownes, 90, of Shediac Bridge, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Sunday, July 19, 2015. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late A. O. and Frances (Smith) Fownes.
After 11 years in the car business, with his father and brother, Don formed Fownes Agency Limited. He was a member of the United Commercial Travellers for over 50 years. Don, with his fine crew of sailors, won the first Shediac-to-Charlottetown sailing race in 1962 aboard his sailboat the Firefly.
Don is survived by, and will be sadly missed by, his daughters, Barb Fownes of Moncton, Liz O'Hanley (Bill) of Edgewater and Kathy Fownes (Nancy Marshall) of Ottawa, ON; grandson, Jason Fraser; sister-in-law, Pat Fownes; Bruce Keddy (godson); best friends, Milton and Ann Keddy of Dartmouth and family; also, many nieces, nephews and sweet granddogs.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis Pearl (Maltby) (love of his life), brother, Dave Fownes; sister, Kay Mowbray and second wife, Mary (Kearns).
Warmest thanks for the exceptional care from Extra Mural of Shediac and Moncton Hospital Palliative Care nurses, under the leadership of Dr. Pat Phelan, who gave such special care to our father.
By Don's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995).
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Friends of The Moncton Hospital or charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family.
