It is with broken hearts, that we announce the passing of Leo Vincent ‘Sonny' Morrison, 78. Sonny passed away, with his loving family at his side, on Sunday, July 26, 2015, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, Sept. 22, 1936, he was the son of the late John Hugh and Cecilia (Burke) Morrison and was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
In his earlier years, Sonny worked in our local coal mines, and later he became the original owner and operator of Sonny’s Taxi, located in Glace Bay. He had many fond memories from his years of driving cabs in our area, but, his greatest memories were from the children that he encountered on a daily basis when he was contracted by the school district to transport them to and from their schools. Sonny enjoyed woodworking, he was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and was a member of the Royal Canadian Leigon, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay.
Sonny will be sadly missed by his wife, Norma (nee Bryden) Morrison; sons, John ‘Sonny’ (Mary Jean), Barrie, Ont; Alan (Mike), Halifax; Stephen (Jean), Halifax/Glace Bay; brothers, Alex (Hughenia), Jerry (Anne Marie), Joey (Colleen), all of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Carrie, Crystal, Jessica, Jennifer, Michael and Clarissa; step-grandchildren, Ryan and Trysten; great-grandchildren, Cian, Ethan; and two special nieces, Setzsueanne and Linda.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by a son, Basil; brothers, Bobby, Irving; sisters, Phyllis and Catherine.
Visitation for Sonny will be held today (Wednesday, July 29, 2015), from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. Mc Gillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 30 at 2 p.m., in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A reception will be held in the church foyer. Cremation to follow.
Memorial donations in Sonny’s memory may be made to the C.N.I.B or the Canadian Cancer Society.
