Passed on: July 28th, 2015

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Joseph McMullen on July 28, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, in the company of his family.
For many years he resided on Hillside, Mira with his loving sister, Isabelle. He was the son of the late Michael Patrick and Effie Margaret (Rambeau) McMullen. The oldest of 10 children, he was born in Dominion and raised on Neville Street. He had two loves in his life: his family and his Catholic faith.
He served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, fighting in Belgium, Holland and Germany during the Second World War. He was seriously wounded in the battle of the Rhineland in Bienen, Germany in 1945. Returning home after his recovery, he worked in Toronto and later ran a successful barbering business in Halifax. He had a long time interest in importing and breeding champion German Shepherds. He was an avid traveler visiting many countries in Europe and maintaining lifelong contact with friends abroad.
Joe is survived by his brother, Winston (Jessie) McMullen, Dutch Brook and his sisters, Betty McMullen and Shirley MacNeil, Dominion; Isabelle McMullen, Hillside, Mira; Marilyn (Ron) Sutherland, Sydney; Dolores MacKenzie, Dartmouth; Ann (Pat) Boyle and Monica (John Rogers), Glace Bay. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Cyril Davis, Toronto. Also surviving are his nieces, Michelle Scott, Betty and Jo-Ann Davis, Meg MacKenzie, Paula Mulvihill, and Patricia McMullen, and nephews, Frank and Michael MacNeil, Donald, Michael and Patrick MacKenzie, Stephen and Andrew Sutherland and Michael McMullen. He is also survived by many loving grand nieces and nephews.
Joe was the proud godfather to Patrick Brendan MacKenzie, Michael Joseph McMullen and Patrick Joseph Sutherland.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Frances Davis, and his brother-in-law, Donnie MacKenzie.
There will be visitation on Sunday, Aug. 2nd from 1 to 4 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport on Monday, Aug. 3rd at 11 a.m. with Fr. Daniel Boudreau and Fr. Albert Maroun concelebrating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the church hall.
