It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Charles Petley on July 30, 2015 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elsie (MacPherson) Petley.
Charles was a miner for seven years and was lighthouse keeper of Lowpoint Lighthouse for 12 years.
In his earlier years, he was into weightlifting and took a liking to it very quickly and decided to open his own gym, where he enjoyed his patrons, both men and women. He liked to tease them and loved the great talks. He also loved boxing and liked to play chess, crib and crossword puzzles.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Albina; son, Ernest (Paula); daughter, Suzanne (Hugh); grandchildren, Sheena and Christopher, as well as six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Joan Rizzo and Margie Rizzo, Marina (Danny Power) Rizzo, Jean MacLean and Theresa Fior (John, deceased), and brother-in-law, John Rizzo.
Besides his parents, Charles was predeceased by his daughter, Deborah; brother, John and his sister, Mary. He is also predeceased by sisters-in-law, Carmel Rizzo, Silvia and Mary; brothers-in-law, Joseph, Peter and Ricardo Rizzo.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015 at 1 p.m. followed directly by a chapel service at 2 p.m. in the McLellan Brothers Chapel with Major Linda Watts (r) officiating. Burial will be held in Union Grove Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500.
Donations can be made to the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit or the Salvation Army.
