Born Nov. 5, 1918, originally from North Sydney, passed away peacefully on Aug. 2, 2015, at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, in Antigonish, N.S.
She will be sadly missed by her devoted and loving husband of 68 years, Alex, and by her five children, Maureen (Guido) Kelly of Hamilton; Kevin (Penny) MacDougall of Antigonish; Anna (Paul) Hannigan of Franklin, Tennessee; Owenita (Aron) Rogers of Dartmouth and Bryden (Betty) MacDougall of Antigonish; 13 grandchildren, Brian, Adam, Jamie, Bryden, Kim, Erin, Shannon, Casey, Ian, Sean, Alexandra, Kayla, and Sarah; 1 great-grandchild, Rowan. She is also survived by her brother, Owen Bryden of North Sydney
She was predeceased by her parents, Rod and Bernadette Bryden; sister, Mary Marinelli and brother, John.
Rita spent most of her life living on Purves Street in North Sydney and attended St. Joseph’s School. She was the last surviving member of the NS Ladies Provincial Softball team from the 1930s. Grammie’s happiest moments were spent with dad, sitting in the front porch. She loved knitting, baking and cooking for all of us and made sure our favourite dishes were there for us when we visited. Mom was also known to enjoy hockey games and could be quite vocal at times while watching them.
The family extends a very special ‘Thank You’ to the amazing staff at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home who lovingly looked after mom.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, on Wednesday, Aug. 5th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund or a charity of choice.
