McINNES, Donald Peter

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of our Dad on Monday, August 10, 2015 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. We loved him and he loved us.
Born in 1933, he was a son of the late Logan and Jennie (Malcolm) and the last of five generations of farmers on the family farm in Lyons Brook. Dad attended Pictou Academy and was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Agriculture College.
He is survived by his first love, Jennie (MacDonald) and his four daughters: Lynn (Jim) MacLean of Lyons Brook, Teri (Chris) Giannou of Halifax, Carol (Greg) Jones of Truro and Karen (Robert) Baillie of Truro; as well as ten grandchildren, four great‐grandchildren and his brother, Robert, Cleveland, Ohio. Dad was predeceased by two sisters in infancy. He was first elected as the MLA for Pictou West in 1978 and was re‐elected in four successive elections, retiring in 1998. During his time in provincial politics he was the chairman of the PC Caucus and held various cabinet positions including Minister of the Environment, Fisheries, Transportation and Agriculture. Dad was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2002. He served as Chairman of the Scotsburn Co‐op Services Board, the Pictou County Municipal School Board and was Executive Director of the Pictou County Mutual Fire Insurance Company. He was a member
of the Lyons Brook United Church and volunteered on many organizations and boards during his lifetime. Dad cared deeply for his community and had an ingrained sense of duty to help and serve others.
