Christina 'Tiny' MacDonald

Passed in: New Waterford
Passed on: August 10th, 2015

We, the family of Christina 'Tiny' MacDonald regret to announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend after a brief illness on Monday, Aug. 10, 2015 at the age of 94 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, with her loving family by her side.
Tiny attended Mt. Carmel and graduated from Central School in 1939. Normal College provided her teaching training. She began teaching in 1941 in Big Harbour, N.S. and continued at many town and country schools throughout Nova Scotia. She returned to her home of New Waterford and taught regular classes, however her specialty was in special education. She said "I learned early in my teaching career that every child is unique and special" and every child was indeed special to her. She was delighted to see so many of her special children attend her 90th birthday. Tiny taught her special children at St. Agnes and Frank Angot School until she retired in 1979.
Tiny was active in the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union and served three terms as local president. She was a great believer in unions. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the NSTU in 1979, an honour achieved by few.
Tiny has always been active in her church and community. She was generous with her time and energy and prayers. She was involved with the building of the New Waterford Rink, president of the Pensioners Club, and the Kinsmen recognized her as Citizen of the Year. She participated in the Rotary Club's read to the Children Program and took special pride in teaching night school to coal miners who wanted to further their education. She completed a four-year term on the parish council and at least once a month she was a lector at mass. Tiny was a life-long member of the Catholic Women's League. She was a talented and entertaining story teller and would share her wisdom with all who would listen.
Tiny was recently asked if she was to summarize her life what would she say, her response was "At times it was hard, but life is good! Thank God."
Tiny is survived by her children, Lorne, Sandy, Roberta (Bill), Francis (Debbie) and John (Lorraine); 19 devoted and loving grandchildren, 20 great-and great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Jean and Rita, and brothers, Stanley 'Creepers' and Raymond.
Besides her parents, Martha and John Malcolm MacDonald, she was predeceased by her first husband, James Alexander MacDonald and her second husband, Colin MacDonald, siblings, Robbie, Davie, Alex, Joe, Emily, Danny 'Duddie Man' and his twin, Archie, children, Brian MacDonald and Marie Boutilier and her grandson, Ryan White.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 13 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A mass in celebration of Tiny's life will take place Saturday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Carmel Centre.
Donations may be made to The Retired Teacher Legacy Foundation.

A Mother's Prayer
Lord, please hear a mother's prayer —
keep my family in Your care.
Help me know what I can do
to guard and guide them all life through.
Most of all, please let me be
a blessing to my family —
A gentle word, a caring friend,
a source of love
that has no end.
