With his wife at his side Peter died quietly, but unexpectedly, in the Harbour View Veterans facility in Sydney Mines on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015.
A son of the late Peter and Anne (Synyshyn) Stephenson, Peter was born on June 21, 1918 in Whitney Pier.
An electrician by trade, Peter completed an obligatory electrical course at the Veterans Vocational School in Windsor, N.S. in 1946, sponsored by the D.V.A. While on his course in Windsor, Peter saved the life of a colleague from drowning as was reported in the Pictou newspaper.
Soon after, Peter was employed by the Sydney Steel Plant as an electrician in the Open Hearth department, where he worked close to 40 years.
Peter was the first Alderman of Slavic origin elected to the Sydney City Council. He represented and served Ward 5 from 1960 to 1972.
An avid sportsman, Peter excelled in swimming, skating, hunting, fishing and always, always walking.
After retiring from the steel plant, Peter spent all his free time from April to November at his “Ranch” in St. Esprit, fishing and hunting with his friends and his cherished dog, Storm.
Besides his parents, Peter was predeceased by his sister, Pauline Claveau and his brother, Mike.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Aggie (nee Wroblewski); nieces, Maria ‘Meema’ Pierrynowski Morrison (Sgt. Barry, CBRP), Wanda ‘Wandzi’ Pierrynowski and Marilyn Stephenson; great nieces, Krystina and Candice Morrison; loving sister-in-law, Mary Wroblewski Pierrynowski and nephews, Mickey Stephenson, Dr. Andre Claveau and Richard Claveau.
A life well lived by Peter, a man of integrity, honesty, sincerity and certainly definite opinions. He was a devoted son, husband, brother and uncle. Peter always said he would “rather be right than Prime Minister”.
A memorial mass to celebrate Peter’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A reception will take place at the Pier Community Funeral Home following the mass, everyone is welcome.
No flowers please, mass offerings and/or donations to St. Mary’s Polish Church Building Fund in honour of Peter would be appreciated.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
