Dr. Roger Clifton Green, born at home in the city of Oldbury, Great Britain, on December 10, 1945, died unexpectedly at home in St. John's, Newfoundland on August 9, 2015. Son of the late Alfred E. and Louie (Davis) Green, Roger is survived by his wife, Gemma Giovannini and their son, Zachary Giovannini-Green; son Jason (Jennifer) and daughter Zoë (Kevin) living in Ontario; grandchildren Nathan, Callum, Targän and Quillan. In England, Roger leaves his brother Brian, sister-in-law Patricia, nieces and nephews, Julie (Paul) and Karen (Mark), and Adrian, Michelle, Lorna, and Joseph. Roger will be missed by brother-in-law, Ian Hendry, Montreal, and nieces and nephews Cynthia (Joseph) Williams and Sarah, Calgary and Stephanie, Thomas, Henry, and Annabel Poynter, Boston, MA; brother-in-law, Albert Giovannini and niece Gina and nephews Gregory and Dylan. In Newfoundland, Roger was admired by uncle Gus and Kay Etchegary, Glenn and Grant and their families. Roger was a special member of the extended Giovannini family of St. Lawrence and will be missed at their gatherings and cousin Betty's Christmas party. He often reminded Adolph (Giovannini) that he taught him as a graduate of Memorial's first medical class. Roger was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Creusa (Giovannini) Hendry, and Donald A. Poynter. Roger also enjoyed being part of the Poynter and McNicholas families - from Sunday dinners to the celebration of every Canadian and American holiday imaginable. He will be missed by Adele and John, nieces and nephews Kate and Patrick McNicholas, Alexander Botsford, and Alison Poynter, as well Robert and Kass Poynter and their family in Ohio. Roger also leaves behind a group of exceptional colleagues and friends. Even as a child, Roger showed exceptional wit and intelligence. In 1963 he was accepted into the School of Medical Biochemistry at Birmingham University, graduating in 1966. In 1969 Roger travelled to St. John's, Newfoundland, with his doctoral supervisor planning on staying a "year or so" to finish his doctorate and return to England. Fate, however, had other plans for him. He stayed in St. John's and took a faculty position at the newly created Medical School at Memorial. He served there as a professor, researching and teaching for 42 years taking particular pride in his lectures, adding jokes and cartoons to make the material more interesting for his students. After officially retiring last September he held the position of Honorary Research Professor and applied his considerable knowledge and experience to ongoing research in the Discipline of Medical Genetics. Roger considered one of his greatest achievements in life was that he lectured every doctor who had graduated from Memorial's Faculty of Medicine. Aside from his work, Roger had a love for hunting, cross-word puzzles, spy novels, duct tape, world radio, cooking, and anything to do with WWII. Another joy for him was the outdoors and he had the distinction of setting up the first geocache site in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001. All who knew him commented on his humour and wit, his kindness and generosity, as well as the sheer breadth of his interests. He was a lifelong fan of Monty Python, and had an eclectic taste in music ranging from classical (Goldberg Variations) to pop (Blondie). He will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at Carnell's Memorial Chapel, on Friday, August 21, at 2pm. Donations can be made to Memorial University for the Dr. Roger C.
