It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing on Aug. 9 2015 of mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Rita MacDougall of Glace Bay.
Rita was born in Glace Bay on Dec.15 1931, the daughter of Susan (Gale) and Frank MacDougall of Reserve Street. She spent many years working as a telephone operator and receptionist, where her genuine warmth and love of talking with others was put to great use. After living for years in Toronto and Montreal, in the 1980s she returned to Glace Bay, where she was happiest. She lived the next decades to the fullest, dancing, volunteering and pursuing hobbies such as family history, reading and visiting the Casino until her last days.
Rita was predeceased decades ago by her first husband, Jim Lee of New Aberdeen, whose surviving sisters are, Rachel Shaw and Charlene Egan (Reggie) of Glace Bay, and Edna Christie of Ontario. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Jim in Nova Scotia and Ken (Connie) in Ontario.
She is survived by her sons, Art Lee in Montreal and Jim Lee (Michelle) in Ottawa; by her grandchildren, Charlotte and Jonathan Lee in Ottawa; by her sisters, Margie Karrer in Ontario and Cora Richards in British Columbia; by her brothers, Hector (Joan) in Ontario and Brian, Greg (Ruthie) and Wayne in Glace Bay; and by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Everyone who met Rita could immediately sense what a good person she was, and she was cherished by her sons, grandchildren and other relatives. While her sudden death leaves us shocked and saddened, we were blessed to have had her with us for as long as we did.
As Rita wished, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015 at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., followed by a celebration of her life and reception. Interment will be at a later date.
