It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alonzo ‘Lonnie’ Grant, age 79 on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015 at his home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth (Smith) Grant.
Lonnie was employed with the Devco Railroad as a dispatcher. After his retired, he formed his own company (L.G. Services), based out of Sydney Airport. Lonnie was an Elder and choir member at Newsom United Church, Glace Bay. He was also a member of the Coal Town Choir and Special Blend Choir, which he truly enjoyed. Lonnie was an avid baseball fan. In his earlier years he played for No. 11 Antonions Ball Club. Lonnie loved his two dogs, Lady and Tessa.
Lonnie is survived by his wife, Jean (Simpson) Grant; sons, Kenny and Robert; daughters, Diane and Grace; stepsons, Greg and Scott Morrison; sister, Beryl; brother, Ken; grandchildren, Kendra, Nicole, Haylee, Dawson, Coady, Luke, Klesie, J.C., MacKenzie, Riley and Morgan.
Besides his parents, Lonnie was predeceased by his first wife, Kay Davidson.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Donald MacDonald is Thursday at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church followed by a reception in the church hall.
Special thanks to Dr. Mark Ellecker and Shelly, Dr. Megan Keeting and Dr. Jeannie Crosby of palliative care. Thank you to the staff of palliative care, V.O.N. for their care and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Newell, you are truly special.
