McKAY, John Hitchens, 71, Shelburne, passed away quietly at Roseway Hospital, with friends by his side, on Sunday, August 16, 2015. Born in Yarmouth on July 29, 1944, he was a son of the late John H. McKay and Polly (Hitchens) McKay. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace Karen (McKay) Bedard, and survived by brother-in-law, Barry Bedard and their children, Stephen Bedard and Jennifer (Bedard) Hayes. John had 3 great nephews and 2 great nieces. As a young man John attended the Nova Scotia Agriculture College and then worked for a short time in Montreal on a farm. He returned home after his father’s death to take over the business of J.H. McKay Marine Railway Ltd. John successfully ran J.H. McKay Marine Railway Ltd. for over 45 years. John’s passion was the business and could be found there on weekends and evenings if any supplies were needed after hours. John took care of many cats over the years that were left at the slip and was especially fond of “Little Tike” who made her home at the slip. John also enjoyed feeding the birds, squirrels and deer in his backyard and was known to empty 50-75 lbs of seed a week. His trips to Spencer’s to get seed and ice cream were known to be his favorite outings. A committal service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery on Friday, August 21 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the home of Tina Boyd, 730 Woodlawn Drive, Shelburne, following the committal. Everyone is welcome to attend.
