Ellen Marie Henriette Rusted (nee Hansen)

Slipped away peacefully on August 17, 2015 at the Health Sciences Centre following a very brief illness. Predeceased in 1979 by her brother, Folmer Hansen, and 2007 by her much loved husband, Dr. Ian Rusted. Leaving to mourn two sons, Christopher (Christine Clouston) and Brian (Christine Sowiak), along with three adored grandsons Jonathan, Peter, and Timothy. Ellen was born in Stenderup, Denmark on March 24, 1917, the daughter of Hans Christian Hansen and Camolle Laurent. After an adventurous childhood living in Denmark and Belgium, her family arrived in Canada in 1929 to start a new life in Tatamagouche, NS. At the young age of 19, Ellen moved to Montreal, Quebec where she worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital until her marriage in 1949. Ellen and Ian then moved to Rochester, Minnesota until 1953 when they moved for the last time, to their home in St. John's, NL. Ellen devoted her life to nurturing her husband, children, and grandchildren so Ian could devote his time and energy to his work. She was active in art groups, various charitable causes, her church, and in later years, the embroidery guild. Ellen was a magnificent cook, a gracious hostess and avid gardener. Ellen's family will receive visitors at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, between 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2015. Funeral services will be at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the “Dr. Ian Rusted Founder’s Fund”, Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador, c/o Alumni Affairs and Development, 20 Lambe’s Lane, St. John’s, NL, A1C 5S7.
