PORTER, B. Arthur – age 87 of Yarmouth, passed away at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on August 17, 2015. Born in Yarmouth on November 25, 1927 he was a son of the late Alvin and Alice (Carter) Porter. Arthur was a lifetime member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church and for most of his working life he worked at the Yarmouth Post office until he retired. Arthur was a past member of the Yarmouth Garden Club, the Yarmouth Museum, and he enjoyed bird watching and writing. He is survived by his loving wife Mildred (Hurlburt); son, Steven (Yarmouth); daughter, Nancy (Halifax); son, Andrew (Donna) Texas; twin grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Arthur was the last surviving, youngest, and longest lived member of his immediate family and besides his parents was predeceased by his brothers, Victor, Donald, Kenneth, Arnold; sister, Dorothy; and uncles, Harry and Victor, their father having died while Arthur was still an infant. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation was held Thursday, August 20, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m. in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass was held Friday, August 21, 2015 at 10 a.m. from St Ambrose Cathedral, Father Henry officiated. Interment followed in Chebogue Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Yarmouth County Museum and Archives. Special thanks to his niece Alice and Greg Melanson for taking him to church when he had stopped driving and his nieces for helping during his final days.
