It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Capt. Robert Blackwood, age 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at his home with his loving wife Eleanor by his side.
Born in Port Nelson, Bonavista Bay, Nfld., on May 2, 1933, Bob was the son of the late Abner and Hilda (Stokes) Blackwood. He was a captain on the Marine Atlantic vessels retiring after many years of service. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. Bob was a member and a Past Master of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge, a member of the Rose Croix and Lodge of Perfection, also the Cape Breton Shriners and a former member of the Fulton Orange Lodge # 1754.
Besides his wife, Eleanor (Jenkins) Blackwood, he is survived by his children, Robert (Jacqueline), Kingston, Ont., Winston (Eleanor), Eastern Passage, Lisa (Mark) Hope, Hollywood, CA, his two stepsons, Floyd MacKenzie, Toronto, Robert (Lorna) MacKenzie, Moncton; his six grandchildren, Lindsay, Ryan, Erin, Colin, Leah, Olivia and two step-grandchildren, Brittany and Brandon MacKenzie, also his sisters, Maude James and Sadie (Carl) Barefoot, both of St. John’s and nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Syretha; his five brothers, Peter, Eric 'Gus', Joseph, Eleazor and Ross; two sisters, Stella Roberts and Neta Burry and his two beloved grandchildren, Lisa and Jason.
A special thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Cathy MacMillan of Palliative Care, VON nurses, the Home Care staff, 4th floor nursing staff at the Northside General Hospital, for the wonderful care shown to Bob.
Visitation for Bob will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A masonic service will be held at the funeral home 6:45 p.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church or a charity of choice.
