It is with heartfelt sadness we, the family announce, the passing of our beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Daniel Gerard Holic, age 67 on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, on Sept. 7, 1947, Gerard was the son of Ann (Matheson) Holic of North Sydney and the late John Holic. He was a coal miner, employed for many years with Devco working at Princess Colliery and later at the wash plant at Lingan. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #8, Sydney Mines. Gerard was a huge fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and loved a good game of ball, it was something he played throughout his life and was considered the best catcher around. He was also the best at doing the cannon ball, he made the biggest splash you ever want to see. He was also a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Besides his mother Ann Holic, Gerard is survived by his soulmate and best friend, his beloved wife, Susan (Bond) Holic; his loving children, Gerard (Cindy) Holic, North Sydney and Laurie (Gordon) Hancock, Sydney Mines; his four grandchildren, of whom he was so proud, Gerard (Michelle) Holic, Jeanna (Scott) Holic, Morgan and Lucas Hancock and a proud great-grandfather to Vaida and Marlo. Gerard was the beloved brother of Ann Marie (Mel) Anderson, Michael (Donna) Holic and Cecilia Holic (Kenny), all in North Sydney. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Rita (Frank); his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Bond; brothers-in-law, Russell (Rodena) Bond, Doug(Heather) Bond, Don (Ann) Bond and Allan (Kathy) Bond and many nieces and nephews. Gerard will be greatly missed by his camping buddies, whom he loved dearly and could not wait for Friday and the start of their camping weekend.
Besides his father John, Gerard was predeceased by an infant daughter, Darleen; a brother, Jackie Holic and his father-in-law, Russell Bond.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to Dr. Paul Hickey, all the nurses and doctors on 4West Northside General Hospital and the staff of palliative care.
Visitation for Gerard will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
