Greg, 78, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015 at Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Alex and Katie (MacPherson) MacDonald (East Bay). For 10 years Greg was a religious brother with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. He held various jobs throughout his working career, some of which included, Atomic Energy of Canada (Heavy Water Plant), Transit Cape Breton, and lastly a bus driver for the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board.
Greg was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. He served communion to the sick and shut-ins and was a member of the church choir. He was also an active member of the Coal Town Chorus.
Many times when he and his wife went for drives, he made sure his fishing rod was in the trunk.
Mostly, Greg will be remembered as a very generous and compassionate man.
Greg is survived by his loving wife, Faustina (MacDonald); his daughter, Anne (Chris) Halfyard, Glace Bay; two sons, Tim (Vanessa), Glace Bay, Andrew (Rose), Halifax; two brothers, Gordon (Lela), Halifax, Reg (Paula), Alberta; four grandchildren, Luke, Madison, Grace, Isabelle,and his mother-in-law, Florence MacDonald.
Also surviving are Greg’s in-laws, Allan (Betty), Fr. Tim MacDonald, Marlene (Jim), Isabel (Tom), Dolena (Barclay), Rachel, Hugh (Colleen), many nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, Greg was predeceased by four sisters, Loretta (Elmer-deceased), Caroline (Andy-deceased), Carmel (Eric-deceased), Margaret (Danny, his fishing buddy); his daughter-in-law, Jackie MacDonald and his father-in-law, Neil MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau and Fr. Tim MacDonald is Monday, 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Reception will follow in the church hall.
Donations in memory of Greg may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
