With great sadness we announce George Melvin Lovell, age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, the evening of Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Emma Lovell. George had a long and full life. He was a devoted and honourable husband and father. He was stoic, strong and a true gentleman. George was a member of Local 682 Union of Steamfitters/Pipefitters/Welders since 1969 and enjoyed the work of a pipefitter, employed with a number of companies throughout his working career.
George was an avid outdoors man who shared many wonderful days with his children, teaching and enjoying the sport of hunting and fishing. In his later years, when it was no longer possible, reminiscing with family always brought a smile to his face.
George is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marlene (Jones) Lovell; his children, Valerie (George) Anderson, Halifax, Larry (Sharon) Lovell, Fort McMurray, John Lovell, Sydney, Phyllis (Graham) Hatcher, Virginia, George (Karen Clarke) Lovell, North Sydney; his seven grandchildren, Jamie and George Anderson, Nicole Holt, Holly King, Keith and Olivia Debison, Olivia Hatcher; special granddaughter, Adrianna Gale; his four great-grandchildren, Hayden and Ryleigh Anderson, Matthew and Ava Debison. Also surviving are his brother, Horace (Verna) Lovell, River Ryan, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, Banks (Gertie) Lovell, North Sydney and sisters, Phyllis (Harris Murray), North Sydney and Irene (Dave Jardine), Leitches Creek.
Visitation for George will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Grace Jones officiating.
