Murray Clish
BROOKVILLE – Lawrence Murray Clish, 85, Brookville, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Brookville.
Born in Old Barns on April 4, 1930, he was a son of the late William Gardner and Maria (Murray) Clish.
As a young man, Murray joined the Canadian Army, serving with the Royal Canadian Artillery. From 1949 – 1952 he trained with the Canadian Army Special Forces on Vancouver Island, B.C.
Upon discharge from the army, he moved back home, marrying the love of his life, Ellen and in 1956 they moved to Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., where he was employed as a millwright with Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. Murray enjoyed nature and would take his family on annual camping, hiking and downhill skiing trips to the Canadian Rockies. He and his family returned home to Brookville in 1977. Murray was a member of Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn where he had served as an Elder. He was a humble and caring person, who never shied away from hard work. Murray greatly enjoyed carpentry, gardening and helping others. He had traveled extensively throughout North America, Britain and Ireland, but there was no place like home. Murray lived life to the fullest and most important to him was his family, who he dearly loved.
Surviving are his children, Robert (Ruth), Hubley; Carol (James) Stewart, Brookville; grandchildren, David (Meryl), Brookville and their son, Charlie; Laura (Dr. JP) King, Halifax; brother, Ed, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.; sisters-in-law, Edith, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.; Jerri, Nanaimo, B.C.; brothers-in-law, Hugh (Marg) MacGregor, MacLellan’s Brook; Robert (Marian) MacGregor, Halifax; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen (MacGregor); sister, Isabel in infancy; brothers, George and Ernest; sisters-in-law, Louise Clish and Marg (MacGregor) Thompson; brother-in-law, Lawrence Thompson.
The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. and Royal Canadian Legion Tribute service 5:45 p.m., both today in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow from where funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in the chapel with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Interment will be in Castle Hill Cemetery, MacLellan's Brook.
