It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Richard Charles Townsend on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015, in the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Over the past three years, Richard has encountered numerous illnesses.
Born Aug. 21, 1935, to the late Carl and Margaret 'Bea' Townsend, he lived most of his life on Fairview Street, his beloved north end. Approximately four years ago, he relocated to Jim Mac Court.
For 35 years, Richard worked at Sydney Steel. He was a member of the Cape Breton Road Runners Club, participating and running in many marathons. He enjoyed going for coffee at Tim Hortons and travelling around the North End on his mobility scooter.
Richard is survived by two sisters, Shirley McLean, Sydney and Louise Lindsey (Joe), Vancouver, B.C. and brother, Jim Townsend, Toronto, Ont. He is also survived by his nephew, Brian Morrison, Sydney; niece, Julia Gordon, Kelowna, B.C.; aunt, Shirley Steuewe, Halifax; several cousins; and sister-in-law, Blanche Brewer, Sydney.
Besides his parents, Richard was predeceased by his wife, Jean, son, Stephen, brother, Bill, nephew, Rick Lindsey, sister-in-law, Christine Townsend, several aunts and uncles.
A special thank you to the doctors and nurses who helped care for Richard during the last six weeks.
A graveside service will be held at Hardwood Hill Cemetery on Friday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Everyone welcome.
A fun loving type of guy, he will be truly missed.
