M. Ruth Smith

1930 - 2015
With profound sadness, our family announces the peaceful passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, Ruth Smith, 85, of Amherst at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Born in Spencer's Island, NS on May 8, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Alonzo and Muriel (Borden) Allen.
Ruth was a passionate Bridge player and was one of the original 'Marsh Hens' with her best friend, the Late Rose Weatherbee, a pair that was definitely a force to be reckoned with. She had been a snowbird for twenty years and had worked for Scotiabank as a secretary for 30 years. She had a vibrant personality and was loved by everybody. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Ruth is survived by her husband of sixty-eight years, Art; daughter, Linda (Jim) Thompson, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB; son, Larry (Sherry), Amherst, NS; sisters-in-law Margaret and Edith Allen, Amherst; grandsons, David (Jennifer) Thompson, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Ernie (Lindsay) Thompson, Saint John, NB; great grandchildren Taylor, Logan, Madalyn and Myles; god son, Cooper MacEwen and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Ella DeWitt, and brothers, Walter and Douglas.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where visitation will take place Tuesday, July, 22, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 am with a burial to follow in the Amherst Cemetery. Rev. Charlotte Ross presiding.
Donations in memory of Ruth may be made to Palliative Care or a charity of the donor's choice.
