It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we, the family of Ethel Florence Chiasson (MacDonald), announce her passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Palliative Care unit, on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
Ethel was born on the MacDonald family farm in Upper Grand Mira on Oct. 15, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Angus James and Annie Jane (MacDougall) MacDonald.
At an early age, Mom’s family moved to Glace Bay where she attended St. Anne’s School excelling in basketball. Mom loved the great outdoors, gardening, skating, bowling and baking. She was known for baking the best homemade bread and buns. Mom enjoyed a good game of horseshoes, a spirited game of cards, and would dance until she barely had the energy to stand.
In 1955, Mom met the love of her life, Gordon ‘Bud’ Chiasson while skating at the Miner’s Forum in Glace Bay. They married on June 26, 1956 and lived 59 happy years together.Mom worked at Thompson and Sutherland’s in Glace Bay, before her marriage. She took time away to raise her four children, and returned to work at Woolco until her retirement.
Mom had a heart as big as the great outdoors and a smile that would warm your heart. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Many of Mom’s fondest memories are of the times spent at the family bungalow in Boisdale surrounded by friends, relatives and eventually, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leaving behind her loving and devoted husband, Gordon; four children and their families, Linda MacLeod (Malcolm), Glenn Chiasson, Nancy Chiasson and Mark Chiasson (Kimberley); five grandchildren, Bradley (Danielle) and Kelli MacLeod, Hannah Chiasson, Jack and Evan Chiasson and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Tucker MacLeod. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Audrey MacDonald and Marie MacDonald Campbell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her brothers, Larry, Alex, Roddie, Leonard, Sylvester and Bryden, sisters, Kaye and Marie and three sisters in infancy.
Mom was the last surviving member of the MacDonald family.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass for Mom will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held in the church hall.
Donations in memory of Ethel may be made to the Hospice Palliative Society of Cape Breton County.
The family gives a special thank you to the County Homemakers, the VON, Dr. Critchley, and the staff and nurses at the Palliative Care Unit (An Cala) at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
