It is with great sadness the family of Cecil Green, announce his passing at the age of 84, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2015, at the Northside General Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in Burgeo, N.L., in July 1931, Cecil was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was the son of the late George and Bertha (Strickland) Green of Burgeo, N.L.
Cecil was a fisherman on Newfoundland fishing schooners at the age of 15. At the age of 19 he joined the MV Josephine, a rescue vessel responsible for rescuing distressed vessels in the North Atlantic. Following his tour with the Josephine he joined the MV Wabana, an iron ore transport vessel as a bosun which took him to all the continents around the world and later he would be wheelsman on the Great Lake boats. In 1965 Cecil decided to hang up his sea hat and don a hard hat, working in construction as a cement finisher and carpenter. Cecil was a member of the International Seafarers Union and the Carpenters and Labourers Union for 25 years.
He was a faithful member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Cecil was a patient teacher and mentor, not only to his family and grandchildren but to many tradesmen and crafts people. Cecil loved working with his hands and to his credit has designed and built from scrap wood several “Bluenose” replicas which can be found in homes from Nova Scotia to Ontario and maybe beyond.
His children and grandchildren enjoyed his many stories of his escapades, his jokes, pranks and especially his whistling and singing for which he will be greatly and sadly missed.
