VERSTRATEN, Hans Robert
Hans Verstraten passed away suddenly from a stroke on September 20, 2015. Hans was born in Balikpapan, Indonesia, on May 24, 1951, and moved to Calgary with his family when he was 2. He completed high school at Viscount Bennett, and then attended SAIT Polytechnic, where he completed the Civil Engineering Technology program. For most of his life, he worked in the precast concrete and general construction industries, in Calgary, Invermere, Sicamous, and Breckenridge, Colorado. Hans enjoyed life immensely, and had an amazing sense of humour. He constantly entertained us with his practical jokes and hilarious stories. He was an accomplished hockey player, hiker, skier, fisherman, motorcyclist, and pilot of both fixed wing aircraft and hang gliders. He was predeceased by his parents, Mabel and Ies, stepmother Louise, step sister Lydia Kamp and her husband Bert, and step brother Addy de Vries (Ria). He is survived by his brother Rin (Karin), special niece Bri, sister in law Janet Dell, “Grandma” Marcie, step brother Paul deVries (Gerda), and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. A celebration of Hans’ life will be held at Valley Ridge Golf Club in Calgary on Saturday October 24 at 2 pm.
