It is with deep sadness we announce the death of John 'Red' Lloyd McNeil. He passed peacefully Oct. 5, 2015 at the Camphill Veterans Memorial Building.
Red was born in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on Jan. 1, 1925. At the age of 17 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force serving as a Tail Gunner and receiving a field promotion to field officer.
Upon his return from overseas he met and married the love of his life, Josephine McNeil (nee Legge). They lived happily together for 59 years before her passing in 2010 with most of their time being spent at the home they built together at Oxford Street in Sydney, or in their summer camper at Seal Island Campground.
John touched many lives through his 45 years working for Sydney Steel and 20 years as the returning officer for Cape Breton South. He was also an active member of the Branch 12 Legion in Sydney and acted as their treasurer for many years.
He will be missed by his family; son, Michael; daughter, Aileen Nauss (Charles) and grandchildren, Erin and Michael Nauss. He is also survived by his brother, Theodore, Reserve Mines and sister, Barb Miles, Toronto.
He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Josephine; brothers, Arthur, Neil and Gerald; as well as sisters, Catherine, Mae, Carmella and Sr. Joseta and a sister, Alexis Marie, in infancy.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015 from 2–4 and 7– 9 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. An interment ceremony will take place at Oakridge Memory Gardens in Sackville on Friday, Oct. 9th at 11 a.m.
