Margaret Ann  Hanam

Passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Margaret has been a resident of McGillivray Guest home, Sydney, N.S. since December 2012. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Elsie (Buchanan) Fownes. Margaret took her nurses training at the Glace Bay Hospital. She served in the Canadian Military for several years overseas following the war. She nursed in several locations throughout Nova Scotia and finished her career at the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck, N.S.
Margaret loved to garden, golf and shower her friends and relatives with preserves of all kinds. Margaret and Ev, her companion of 30 years, loved to travel and had many adventures together.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of the McGillivray Guest Home for treating Margaret with such kindness and compassion. She loved you all.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Anne Macleod (Sandy), Margie Spinney (Chuck), Robert (Bob) MacKay (Pam), Frederick MacKay (Lyn) and Allison Gingell (Peter) as well as eight great-nieces and nephews and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Elsie Fownes; sister, Barbara MacKay (Robert); brother, William (Billy) Fownes (Hazel) and longtime companion, Evelyn Brenton.
There will be no visitation at Margaret’s request. She has been cremated. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8th at Saint Andrews United Church at Baddeck Forks with Rev. Alison Etter officiating. Burial to follow at the Baddeck Forks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
