Well-known New Minas resident passes away.
Bernard Franklin 'Bernie' Lewis , 81, of New Minas, passed away peacefully at home Friday, Oct. 9, 2015.
Born on May 25, 1934 in Edwardsville, C.B., he was a son of the late Gerald and Maude (Stapleton) Lewis of Westmount, C.B..
From February 1954 to November 1965, Bernie held the position of Corporal Second Battalion of the Black Watch. After leaving the military service, he moved to Kentville and worked for Cornwallis Dairy; at the gas station for the late Harold Pearl and the late Bob Roberts. He later worked for the Kentville Electric Commission and the Kentville Police Department as a constable for 11 years.
Due to health reasons, in 1987 he left his position as a deputy sheriff for the Attorney General Department, Sheriff's Division of Kings County. He was a lieutenant with the New Minas Volunteer Fire Department, a Scout leader for the New Minas Boy Scouts and coached the 1st New Minas soccer team.
Bernie enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Aylesford Lake. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Jean White; two daughters, Heather (Dave), Edson, Alberta; Ellen (Duncan) and their daughter Sydney, Kentville; three sons, Frank (Lynn), Olds, Alberta and their children Ryan and Aaron; Ernie (Andrew), Bermuda; Gerald (Angela), Calgary, Alta. and their children Stephanie, Nikolas and Lindsey; a brother, Sinclair (Alice), Westmount, C.B.; and his furry friend, 'Zigzag the cat'; sister-in-law, Marie, Westmount, C.B.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Irene and Norma; three brothers, Roland, Lloyd and Gerald.
Special thanks to Dr. Michael Wadden, Palliative Care nurses and the VON home support. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A celebration of Bernie's life, followed by a reception, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Kentville. Burial will take place at a later date in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville.
Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, the Lung Association, the SPCA or a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
