It is with broken hearts that we regret to announce the passing of Gerald Joseph ‘Bruz’ Brennan, 87, on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, N.S.
In his humble way, Gerald approached life with passion, wit and kindness. Born in North Sydney, N.S., on Sept. 14, 1928, he was the youngest son of the late Gerald and Elizabeth (Penny) Brennan. Gerald graduated from St. F. X. in 1953 with Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He owned and operated R. Hickey & Company Insurance and Real Estate for over 40 years. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Parish, North Sydney. In retirement he relocated to Long Point, Inverness County, and was a devote member of Stella Maris parish in Creignish. Gerald had a love of the water and enjoyed many years of swimming and sailing on the Bras D’Or Lakes. He was a member of the Northern Yacht Club and Father William Kiely Knights of Columbus. Gerald was an avid reader with a keen interest in history. As a devoted family man, the commitment and love Gerald had as a husband and father were immeasurable.
Left to mourn is his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Eugenia 'Jeannie' (nee MacMaster) and his nine children, Susan (Hiroshi) Kawaguchi, Halifax, Gerald (Sharyn), Groves Point, N.S., Mary, Halifax, Michael, Calgary, Alta., Anne (Chris) Carvalho, Cochrane, Alta., Allan (Cathy) Okotoks, Alta., Genevieve (Greg) Black, Raleigh, N.C., Maureen, Halifax, and Maura (Brian) Holmes, Halifax; grandchildren, Michael, Adam, Sarah, Rory, Andrew, Patrick, John, Daniel, Emily, Claire, Alec, Duncan, and Brennan. He leaves behind his sister Celine Hatherly and was predeceased by his brother John. Also left behind are many nieces and nephews who Gerald was very fond of.
Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 82 Pierce St., North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating with a reception to follow in the church basement. Burial will take place at St. Andrews Parish Cemetery in Judique at a later date.
