It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Carlton 'Carl' Francis Morrison age 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015 at the Northside Community Guest Home. Carl was formerly a resident of Tobin Avenue, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney on Aug. 21, 1926, he was son of the late Henry and Jessica (Walker) Gouthro. Following unfortunate circumstances he was forever grateful to become the adopted son of the late Lauchie and Margaret (Hurley) Morrison. Always active, Carl was always happiest when on the go. He loved all boats and the sea. As a young boy he enjoyed doing errands for the men on the boats and continued to do so most of his life. Wanting to help his family in a time of crisis, he quit school at age 14 and spent days asking for a job at the North Sydney wharf. He was finally given one after performing a task they thought he couldn’t possibly accomplish. He worked for many years for CN Marine and later Marine Atlantic, and ‘the wharf’ was like a second home to him; his many co-workers like family. He retired from Marine Atlantic in 1991. Always on the lookout for a bargain, Carl went to the United States in 1964 to buy a new car and came back with a bride who just happened to have a brand new sports car. Carl loved wheeling and dealing so much, he must have thought he struck the deal of a lifetime. Carl had a large number of friends not only in Nova Scotia but also in Newfoundland and St. Pierre et Miquelon, whom he loved dearly. A personal friend of Hank Snow he remained a true fan throughout his lifetime. Carl was known for his generousity to those in need. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Claire (Templeton) Morrison; his two daughters, Jean Morrison, Shubenacadie and Bermetta Morrison Phillips (Walter Fougere), Halifax; his three grandchildren, Haley, Chelsea and Cameron Fougere. He is also survived by his half-brother, Hugh (Lucy) O’Handley, Leitches Creek and their children, Mary, Hughie and Penny, as well as a neighbor and close friend, niece, Euphemia Menard, and a number of other nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Lauchlan, John, Howard, Francis and sisters, Margaret, Hilda, Winnie and Catherine.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for the many acts of kindness and care shown to Carl during the past two years.
Visitation for Carl will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to your local Food Bank would be appreciated.
