Rod passed away in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on Oct. 18, 2015, at the age of 63 with his loving spouse, Carol Whalen, by his side.
Born in North Sydney, Feb. 7, 1952, he was the son of Edith Landry and Daniel MacDonald. Rod grew up in North Sydney, then moved to Calgary, Alta., where he lived for the next 30 years, but, always remained a Cape Bretoner at heart. He worked as a taxi driver, stockbroker and finally a welder/pipefitter, graduating to welding inspector. He moved back to Nova Scotia in 2006 when he met Carol and they lived in Nine Mile River for almost 10 years.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Landry (94); wife, Carol Whalen; sons, Daniel (Carmen), Darryl (Joanna); daughters, Erin (Jon) and Kiera; grandchildren, Lexis and Kennedy; sister, Ann (John) Crumley and their children, Tracy (Tim) and Justin (Jenny).
Rod had a vast circle of friends from Cape Breton to British Columbia. Golf and tennis were his passions and he seldom missed an opportunity to play. His other love was boats & sailing, spending time on the water with friends whenever he could.
As per Rod's wishes, his body had been donated to Dalhousie University Human Body Donations Program to help further medical research.
An informal memorial service will be held in Enfield Legion Hall on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1-3 p.m. Anyone wishing to share a few words or stories will be most welcome and appreciated. Rod was very generous and kind and will be sorely missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
