It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Edward Lewis, longtime resident of North Sydney, at the age of 79. George passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015 at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his wife and loving family, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer Disease.
Born in North Sydney on Jan. 17, 1936, he was the son of the late Harry and Maude (Hinks) Lewis. George served with the Royal Canadian Service Corp during peacekeeping in Korea. He was a member of Local 682 Plumbers and Steamfitters of Sydney and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19 in North Sydney, serving as service officer and on the branch executive. George was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus, #5109 in North Sydney and was an avid horse owner and trainer. George was owner of Lewis Plumbing & Heating and worked in construction for many years.
George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Susan (Perry) Lewis; as well as his 10 children, Harry (Philomena), Westville, Margaret, North Sydney, Michael (Judy), Beaumont, Alta., Patsy, Sydney, Peter (Margie), Suzanne (Dave), both of Elmsdale, Brad (Patricia), Grand Prairie, Alta., Willie, Laverne (Walter), Bradford, Ont., Scott (Jodi), Quispamsis, N.B., and his 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Hector (Eileen) Lewis, Sydney Mines, Dan Lewis, Bernice (Charles) Sampson, both of North Sydney, Sadie (Ray) Joyes, Woodstock, Ont., and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Jim, Bill, Stan, Mary, Floss, Margaret, Hazel, Joyce and Shirley, as well as Claude and Harry in infancy.
The family would like to thank Dr. Marek Knott and his staff, the staff at the ER and also 4 West at the Northside General Hospital for their excellent care and also the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Visitation for George will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill and Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
