MEAVE VIVIENNE LONGPRÉ (NEE DIXON)
Meave passed away quietly in the palliative care unit of St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon, SK on October 29, 2015 at the age of 95.
Meave is predeceased by her husband, Maurice of Prince Albert, SK; parents Howard and Grace Dixon of Pangbourne, England; her sister, Angela Maurice of Nettleton, England; and her husband Maurice’s daughters Marcelle Turnbull (Al) and Eleanor Armstrong (Wally).
Meave is lovingly remembered by sons Joseph (Roberta) of Toronto, ON and Richard (Ysanne) of Saskatoon, SK; sister Poppy of Pangbourne, England; grandchildren Joseph (Heather) and Mackenzie of Toronto, ON and Galen and Sarah of Saskatoon, SK, her niece Judy Cordy of Coalville, England; her husband Maurice’s grandchildren Gordon Turnbull of Cortes Island, BC, Michael Armstrong (Annette) of Regina, SK, Patrick Armstrong (Katie) of Comox, BC, and Kelly Strang (Bill) of Gray Creek, BC; and her husband Maurice’s six great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
Meave was born in Reading, England on July 8, 1920. She graduated in 1939 from Combe Bank School, a boarding school founded by the Society of Holy Child Jesus in Sundridge, Kent, England. She was about to enter university when the Second World War broke out. During the War, she first drove an ambulance in Reading before joining the Women’s Timber Corps, a division of the Women’s Land Army. After the War, she obtained her certification in physiotherapy at Guy’s Hospital in London. She immigrated to Canada in 1952 to join the Canadian Arthritis Society. Based at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, she also traveled to small towns throughout Saskatchewan conducting physiotherapy clinics. After her husband Maurice’s death in 1976 she resumed part-time work as a physiotherapist and also became a real estate agent.
Meave was an excellent equestrian as a young woman, winning many trophies at horse shows as early as age 10. She was also a good sportswoman, enjoying tennis and golf. She did not like cooking, but always produced excellent results. She will be remembered for her dry sense of humour and warm hospitality.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff on the 5th and 7th Floors and the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital and the staff at St. Ann’s Home, Saskatoon for their compassionate care and kindness.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1401 - 4th Avenue West, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. Committal of Meave’s ashes will follow at South Hill Cemetery, 100 block of Marquis Road West, Prince Albert.
