It is with great sadness that we, the family of Vera Popwell, announce that she passed away on Nov. 3, 2015 at the Glace Bay Hospital, at the age of 77, with family by her side after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
She was a longtime resident of Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late George 'Skipper' and Collette (Nearing) Murphy.
Vera served in the Air Force where she had the opportunity to blossom into a strong, compassionate, and kind woman. Following this, Vera met and fell in love with her soldier Leo Popwell. They loved to jive, laugh and spend time with their family. She spent the rest of her life devoted to family as a mother, sister, friend and confidant. Vera and Leo had a love so eternal that she decided to follow him to the other side just seven months later.
Vera is survived by their five children, Darlene (David) Blackburn, Leo (June) Popwell, Jerry (Hazel) Popwell, Darrell (Carole) Popwell, Kevin (Christine) Popwell; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; 13 brothers & sisters, James Murphy (Patsy), George Murphy (Irene), Fabian Murphy, Sheldon Murphy (Louise), Diane Lawrence (Howard), Joan Power (Paul), Paula Murphy, Patricia Lepage (Francois), Gloria Coculuzzi (Luigi), Donna Morgan (Blair), Anne Marie Brown (David), Debra Murphy (Mike), Sandra Watkins (Brian); Anne Popwell (lifelong bestfriend).
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Francis and sister, Heather and uncle Stanley "Brother".
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray funeral Home,16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee, will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 6, 2015 at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be held at later date.
Donations in Vera’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
