Passed on: November 5th, 2015

SWAINE, Allan Lloyd, Upper Port LaTour Shelburne County passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Born in 1926 in Cape Negro, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia he was the only son of the late Lloyd and Florence (Nickerson) Swaine. He was an avid sportsman and remained extremely active well into his eighties before succumbing to prostate cancer. Allan was a WWII veteran, a great outdoorsman, licensed backwoods hunting guide and an outstanding baseball player in his younger years. He was one of the founding members of the Shelburne County Sportsmen’s Association (Beaver Dam Sports Meet), a competitive marksman and former Nova Scotia Trap Shooting Champion. He was an officer with the Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans for a number of years and later started his own business, Swaine’s Motor Sports. He was well known in Nova Scotia as one of the earliest collectors of antique firearms, a hobby which he pursued with his father for many years. Allan was blessed with many gifts; intelligence, athleticism and excelling at any task he took on. Good natured and good looking… he was instantly likeable. He had two families who truly loved him and was fortunate all of his life to have had many good friends of all ages who shared his love of the outdoors and in particular motorcycles and snowmobiles. At 86, he spent most winter weekends in the backwoods and rode thousands of kilometers on his snowmobile. He made deep friendships and during his illness his friends supported his family so that there was rarely a day when he was not surrounded by people who cared. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his loving and devoted wife, Lillian (Rodgerson); children, Linda Jeffrey (Dr. Peter), Shelburne, Darryl Swaine (Jane), Clyde River; stepson, Lee Rogerson (Rachel), Cape Negro; grandchildren, Nick Jeffrey, Andrea Jeffrey, Jillian Swaine, Kate Dixon, Laura Swaine, Kyle Rogerson and Luke Rogerson and by six great grandchildren as well as special nephew & niece, Brian Smith and Elaine Smith-Hughen. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marion (Perry) and by daughter Susan in childhood, older sisters Dorothy Smith, New Jersey, U.S.A. and Hazel Lowe, Shelburne, Nova Scotia. The family would like to thank Lillian for the loving care that was given to Dad during his long illness and the V.O.N. whose support allowed him to remain happily at home for the past two years. A special thank-you for the care provided in the last few months to Dr. Mark Riley, the Palliative Care Team and the nursing and support staff at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. There will be a memorial service 2 p.m., Sunday, November 8 from the St. Mathews United Church, Clyde River, Pastor Cindy Dunnett officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be in the Cape Negro Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Barrington Victorian Order of Nurses.
