It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Charles Claude Hickey, on Nov. 14, 2015 at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney, July 20, 1916, he was a son of the late Charles and Katherine (MacKenzie) Hickey.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (MacDonald), in 2005, his sister Margaret Hickey and his brothers, Arthur and Stuart Hickey.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Paul (Heather) Hickey, North Sydney, Susan McKay, Sydney, Joanne (Richard) Chabassol, Sydney and Louise (Angus) Fleming, North Sydney; grandchildren, Caelin (Patrick), Peter (Erin), Bruce (Karen); Jane (Ronnie); Allison (Stewart), Claire (Jamie); Nancy, Mark and Suzanne; and great-grandchildren, Rachel, Willow, Riven, Fern, Bronsen and Brighton.
He began his business career in 1936 when he opened The Sydney Mines Bargain Store, retiring in 1992. He truly enjoyed every day he spent in the store and he was grateful to the people of Sydney Mines and the surrounding areas for their support. He was also a partner in Crowell's Ltd. Department Store for many years. He was an active member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines.
A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be remembered for his generosity, thoughtfulness and positive outlook on life. Many family members, friends and customers have been touched by his kindness.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of the Northside Community Guest Home for their kindness, compassion and excellent care during the past five years.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) in W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, from Carman United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, Rev. Nick Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Community Guest Home, Carman United Church or a charity of your choice.
