On Nov. 13, 2015, an angel, Wilhelmina 'Winnie' MacKay, 94 was reclaimed. She passed away in comfort in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Sydney Regional Hospital with family by her side.
She was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on July 22, 1921, to William and Mary Jane (Kennedy) Gould.
In the war years, she worked as a seamstress. Her husband was in the Canadian navy, and she met him at a dance when his ship had a stop over in Northern Ireland. She soon immigrated to Canada.
Winnie was an avid reader, a fan of Jeopardy, Dancing With The Stars, music, church, and a former choir member at Bethel Family Church, Glace Bay.
Right to the end, she was known for her great sense of humour, story telling and laughter.
She is survived by daughters, Edith (Barry), Anne (Gerry); sons, Jim (Sue) and Harris (Sylvia); grandchildren, Cathleen (Brad), Jim, Scott, Nicky, Sarah, Michael, Alana and Jesse. Also, survived by great-grandchildren, Steven, Amy, Daniel, Jessica and Kaitlin and several nieces and nephews in Northern Ireland and one in Australia.
Besides her parents, Winnie, was predeceased by her husband, Harris, sons, William and Michael, and a daughter, Patty. Also, she was predeceased by brothers, Carson, Samuel, Alexander, Norman, and sisters, Sarah and Kathleen and their spouses (all of the U.K.)
A sincere thank you to Dr. Oei, and all the doctors, nurses and volunteers at the An Cala unit, and to her dear friends and visitors. Thank you to Rev. Stephen Fenton, and the board and congregation of Bethel Family Church.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Family Church, Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Interment to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Glace Bay.
