Donald Campbell

It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of our father, Donald John Campbell (October 1935-November 2015).
He passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving wife and children who loved him beyond words.
He leaves behind to grieve his passing, his wife of 55 years Carole Ann Campbell (nee Bresson); daughters, Donna Campbell, Kimberly (Stephen) MacKenzie, Michelle (Stephen) MacIntyre; sons, Donald (Tana) Campbell and Derek (Mandy) Campbell; grandchildren, Carla, Mitchell, Kristen, Andrew, Erica, Cassidy, Joshua, Zachary and baby Campbell 2015; great-grandchildren, Max, Chase, Ellie, Iris Blythe and baby Dunlop 2016. He is also survived by his brother Wishie (Minnie) Campbell.
Dad was the son of the late Donald and Annie Campbell and was predeceased by sisters, Carmella, Veronica, Dorothy, Thecla, Theresa, Susan and brothers William and Malcolm. He was also predeceased by his best friend of over 50 years, Reggie Finlayson.
Dad was a very hard working man, employed for 35 years as a coal miner with Devco where he held several positions including Shotfire and Draagerman.
Dad was a pillar of his community, serving 35 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Dominion Fire Department, a duty he was honored to do and upon his retirement remained active on committees as an honorary member. He also served as town councillor for the former Town Of Dominion for 20 years, nine of which was as deputy mayor. In his community he was a member of several committees over the years such as the Heritage Committee and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion due to his military service as a young man.
Dad enjoyed sports very much, he coached little league baseball, a sport he loved. He also enjoyed hockey, playing darts and was a member of the Colliery Bowling League.
As active as our father was serving his community, he enjoyed his time with family, something he always made sure he accomplished. He took great pride in his family, he truly was the best husband, father and poppy that a family could ever have been blessed with. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him dearly.
Visitation will take place on Thurday, Nov. 19 from 6-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Bridgeport on Friday, Nov. 20.
Donations can be made in his memory to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
"I never will forget him
For he made me what I am
Though he may be gone
Memories linger on
And I miss him, my old man"
