OUTHOUSE, Burton Laverne left home port for the last time on December 8, 2015 surrounded by his family at Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Tiverton, Nova Scotia on February 20, 1937, he was the son of the late Edison (Skip) and Elinor (Thompson) Outhouse. Growing up in Port Maitland he answered the call of the sea at a young age where he spent many years as a fisherman and captain of several of his own boats. He was a successful fisherman who lived his life with a deep respect for the sea. Retirement meant leaving the sea for the land and this brought about new hobbies that included vegetable gardening, model boat building, carving, painting, time to read, following the Blue Jays and rope mat weaving. All of these hobbies somehow allowed him to return to his love of the sea. He made many friends throughout his life whether he found them on a boat, at a wharf, at a campground, or on his walks around his community or the many places he visited. Burton is survived by his wife of 55 years , Nettie (McCullough), his son Terry (Nancy) of Port Maitland, his daughter Vicky (Gerard LeBlanc) of Middle West Pubnico, granddaughters Deanna (Steven Doucet), Amanda Outhouse, Ashley LeBlanc, grandson Greg LeBlanc; great grandsons Ethan and Korbin Doucet, great granddaughter Taylor Doucet; sisters Carole Nickerson, Iris (Mickey) Johnson, Crystal (Jim McDormand), brother David (Anne Walker); sisters-in-law Marg Davidson, Beulah Burns, brother-in-law Doug (Alice) McCullough, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service was held on Friday, December 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth, Rev. Donald Moses and Pastor Keith Moore officiated. Flowers were welcomed as well as memorial donations to a charity of your choice.
