Ross Wyvern Peyton, 1929 January 11 – 2015 October 19
Ross was a true entrepreneur living and working in Newfoundland, northern Quebec and southern Baffin Island. Working in the woods, for the Hudson’s Bay Company and then himself, he mastered many skills, such as fur trader, merchant, banker, radio operator, Justice of the Peace, etc. He closed down the last whaling station in the eastern Arctic, was an Officer of the Canadian Rangers, built an airstrip, reloaded rifle ammunition, built and operated a fishing lodge and hotel where he hosted royalty and mountain climbers alike. Ross was well-read and thoroughly enjoyed a good debate. Ross leaves behind an extensive family and friends world-wide who will have many fond memories of Ross and his story-telling. He is survived by his sisters Beulah (Howard Noseworthy) and Audrey (David Gregory) as well as his brothers-in-law Mackenzie Whitman, George Major and Scott Purchase and sister-in-law Betty Peyton. He is survived by his daughter Jeni (Peter Bannon) of Yellowknife, NWT and Jeffrey (Virginia Turner) of Pangnirtung, Nunavut. He was predeceased by his first wife Yvonne and daughter Louise (George Alexander) and his second wife Kathleen. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Sarah and Joseph-Patrick Bannon; Nathaniel, Erika and Matthew Alexander; and Patricia, Thomas and James Peyton and ten great-grandchildren – as well as numerous nieces and nephews; namely, Paula who played an important role in his life. He is survived by his Lambert step-children: Barbara (Ian Smith), Marilyn, Philip (Jennifer Payne), Paul and Brad. An informal salute to his remarkable life was held on Sunday, 25 October simultaneously at Sandy Point and various locations across Canada and the USA. A Celebration of Life is planned for Ross Peyton at Sandy Point, Labour Day Weekend 2016.
