Rev. Frederick Pike

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rev. Frederick D. Pike at St. Patrick's Mercy Home, St. John's on December 30, 2015, in his 87th year. Rev. Pike began his working career in the fishing industry at age 15. He went on to sell and deliver for a local furniture store. In 1950 he moved to Toronto where he worked for a year in the shipping department of a manufacturing company. Upon his return to Corner Brook he was a construction worker at the Cement and Gypsum Plants. He was employed with Western Memorial Hospital and was instrumental in getting a union organized for hospital workers. For a time he worked at Carnell's Funeral Home in Corner Brook as a funeral director and ambulance driver. He spent many years plastering and painting homes and businesses including the Bowater Paper Mill. In 1985 he completed training and realized his lifelong dream of becoming a clergyman. This last career and most fulfilling for him was with the United Church of Canada where he held postings at Elliston, Englee and Hillview. Throughout his life, he loved camping, fishing and spending time at his cabin at George's Lake. Following his retirement in 1994 he and his wife Josephine travelled extensively. He is survived by his wife Josephine (Crocker-Sparkes), his children Fred Pike Jr., Doris Butt (Lloyd), Keith Pike (Judy), his stepchildren, Bob Crocker (Shirley), Rosalind Crocker, Alice Hollihan (John), Keith Crocker (Holly), and Carol Crocker; his 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Fern Murphy (Gerald), Maisie Brake (Freeman), sisters-in-law Ada Borden and Betty Layden and brother-in-law Curtis Mitchell (Ann) as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Angelina E. (Mitchell), his parents Harrison and Annie Pike, his siblings John, Marjorie, Thelma Pike and Muriel Simms and husband John. Visitation will take place at Country Haven Funeral Home 167 Country Road, Corner Brook Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Funeral service will be held Sunday, January 3 at 2 P.M. at Memorial United Church, Curling Street, Corner Brook. Internment at Mt. Patricia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Memorial United Church, Curling St. or a charity of one's choice.
