Joan Lexina MacDonald

Born In: Cape North
Born: December 8th, 1931

Passed on: December 30th, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Joan Lexina (nee MacLean) MacDonald, 84 years, on Dec. 30, 2015, at home.
Joan was born in Cape North, N.S., to the late Neil Duncan and Annie Mae (Petrie) MacLean on Dec. 8, 1931.
Beloved wife of the late Gordon Duncan MacDonald. They married in August 1953. She was 21. She never stopped loving him. Devoted mother of Duncan (Ave), Prime Brook, Bruce (Cathy), Cape North, Charlie (Michelle), Hamilton, Ont., Darlene, at home, Norman (Cindy), Cape North, and her youngest, Gordie, at home. Smokey and Sammy will miss her caress.
Loving grandmother to 13 grandchildren, Cassie, Joni, Shaylynn, Jenna, Logan, Mason, Drew, Allyson, Sydney, Colton, Kianna, Connor and Tanner. Proud great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dominic, Jayden, Marshall, Tatum and Noah. Joan’s passion was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Loving sister of Susan MacDonald, Catherine Sykes, Anna (Dennis) Gilmore, Lena Risk, James (Hope) MacLean, Linda (John) Ardelli and Annette Nicholson.
Predeceased by sisters Annabelle and Eileen, and brother Angus.
Joan enjoyed a good cup of tea and spending time with her family and friends. She had a quiet strength and a great sense of humour. She laughed a lot. If she was your friend, and she had many, you had a real friend, and a friend forever. She loved to sing, and could light up a dance floor until recently. She raised six children on her own, the oldest just 14 years old, when the love of her life Gordon passed in 1977. She was 45. She did her best and did it right. Her kindness is no secret. “Up Home” in dear old Bay Road Valley was her home for many years, and it was a place filled with her love, and the finest of her homemade baked goods and wonderful meals.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Tuesday, Jan. 5, from 5-9 p.m, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
Condolences and memories may be shared at Aspy Bay United Church on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at Aspy Bay United Church with Rev. Margie Wood officiating. Interment at Aspy Bay Cemetery immediately thereafter.
“She wore a smile sweeter than millions of flowers. A smile that we’ll carry through life's darkest hours.” - George Jones, Flowers for Mama.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home.
