Frederick McEachern

McEACHERN, FREDERICK
We, the family of Frederick James McEachern, sadly announce that Fred slipped peacefully away on January 3, 2016 at Ivy Meadows, Beaver Bank, NS. Born in Boston, MA on April 7, 1927, he was the son of the late Frederick James McEachern and Mabel (Whittaker) Thorpe.
Fred was a very successful and accomplished HVAC mechanic and business owner throughout his long career. However, he was most proud of his military service in the West Nova Scotia Regiment, Camp Aldershot, retiring as a Major. He continued to be involved with the military, both as a volunteer and with the Corps of Commissionaires. He had a great interest in politics as a member of the Progressive Conservative party and once ran for municipal councillor in Lower Sackville. But he often said that his greatest accomplishment was his family and, in particular, his five girls who will very much miss his sly smile and witty turn of phrase.
Fred leaves to mourn his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Carey (formerly of Moncton); daughters Janet (Eric) Raftus, Eastern Passage; Christine (Rick Shunamon) McEachern and Karen McEachern, Beaver Bank; Elizabeth (Alphonse) Benteau, Edmonton; and Susan (Michael) Atkins, Ottawa; grandchildren James (Oksana), Sarah, Erin, Matthew (Michelle), Julia, Ian, Shawn, Nicholas, Samantha and Nicole; great-grandchildren Victoria, Zachery, Kelsey, Brenton, Ella, Anna, Jasmine, Alyssa, Madison, Brady and Charlie; great-great grandchildren Ally and Bryden; sister, Dorine McKnight, Halifax; several nieces and nephews.
Very special thanks go to the staff of Ivy Meadows Nursing Home who looked after Fred so well for almost four years. It was an immense comfort to us to know he was in such a caring environment and loved by so many.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 7 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Halifax from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, with funeral service being held on Friday, January 8 at 2:00 pm in St. John Vianney Church, 4 Beaver Bank Road, Lower Sackville. Reception will follow at the church. Interment of ashes in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated for Friends of Ivy Meadows, 125 Knowles Crescent, Beaver Bank, NS B4G 1E7 or friendsofivymeadows@gmail.com. Condolences, words of comfort, and memories of Fred may be shared with the family at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
