Neil Ernest Tibert - 49, passed away on December 20, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Catharine’s, Ontario on August 7, 1966. Neil was an intensely proud Nova Scotian. He grew up on Long Island, Nova Scotia, along the southwestern shores of the Bay of Fundy. He attended school at Islands’ Consolidated in Freeport, Nova Scotia and then Dalhousie University in Halifax, where he received both his Bachelor and Master of Science in Geology. He went on to complete his Doctorate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2002. He and his family then set their roots in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2003. Neil joined the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Mary Washington where he taught and conducted research for over 12 years. During these years he inspired many students with his passion for science and discovery. His geological research encompassed Canada and the United States, and was later expanded to his land of heritage in Scotland and Ireland. He was a man of music, and was a talented guitarist from an early age. After settling in Virginia, Neil resumed his passion for music and initiated multiple rock/blues bands that frequented clubs all over Virginia. Left to honor his zest for life and love of family are his loving wife Lisa; son, Dylan; daughters, Chloe and Riley; loving parents, Richard and Rita (Ramsey) Tibert; sisters, Tammy-Lynn Provencal (Vernon) and Vicki Tibert (Howard); brother, Jayson Tibert (Pamela); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Michael Welch. Family, friends and colleagues are invited to a Memorial Service at the University of Mary Washington on January 16, 2016.
