Dorothy Allan Harrity (MacQuarrie)

HARRITY (MacQuarrie), Dorothy Allan – 90, Truro, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, she was the only daughter of the late Charles Allan and Maria (Grant) MacQuarrie of Truro. She was educated in Truro schools, attended Mount Allison University and graduated from Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She continued a career in nursing at Montreal Neurological Institute under Doctor Wilder Penfield, followed by postgraduate courses at the Institute and at Toronto General Hospital. She was part of a team that established the first Department of Neurosurgery / Neurology in New Brunswick at Saint John General Hospital. A few years after retirement she and Gordon moved to reside in Truro. She was a life member of First United Church, a long term member of the U.C.W., Alumni Association of Royal Victoria Hospital, and an early member of the Clan MacQuarrie Association of Atlantic Canada; she was always very proud of her Scottish ancestry. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gordon E. Harrity; brother, C. Malcolm MacQuarrie. She is survived by her stepson, Robert E. (Shirley), and children, Jason (Lisa) Harrity and Jana (Brad) Kirkpatrick and their children, Saint John, New Brunswick; sister-in-law, Charlotte MacQuarrie; nephews, Charles (Linda), Rod; niece, Martha, and their children, of Truro and Kentville as well as Janet MacFadden, devoted long-term friend and caregiver; many cousins and good friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Dorothy’s family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Saturday, January 9, 2015, and funeral service 3 p.m., Sunday, January 10, 2015, Reverend Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Reception will follow. Family interment at Robie Street Cemetery, Truro, will be held at a later date. If desired, memorials may be made to the Malcolm MacQuarrie Endowed Fund for Neuroscience c/o Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation, or a charity of choice.
